Creating New Music: Interpretation and Influence – Part 1
ByAs someone that enjoys creating new music, I find my inspiration from so many musical sources. Everything from the extreme nature and sounds of Opeth, to the genius of Matthew Bellamy and the band Muse all the way to include old Elton John (with songs like “Daniel” and “Your Song” that are like painted pictures from my childhood. When I sit down to write a new song, I don’t typically sit down with any goals. I just play what comes out. Since I don’t know much music theory, I rely mostly on the music I have loved in my life – old and new. I allow these bands and musicians to influence me and I find myself relating to songs and/or styles and what I end up with is an interpretation not of one band but of an entire life of listening to a wide variety of musicians and bands.
For me, I get the most satisfaction from capturing and interpreting all of these influences by recording improvisations. Those of you that have followed my playing in 2010 know how often I improvise and upload whatever came out that night. It takes a lot of time and discipline to do that every night (which I why I had to stop – at least for a while). It takes effort to get myself in a frame of mind where I’m not worried about anything or my mind is not split between the music I’m writing and work that needs to get done so I can pay bills.
I hope to once again make some time to create new music and upload it. For now, it’s back to work so I can pay those bills!
