“The Storm Is On” 07-12-10
ByScott Quillin – “The Storm Is On” (Instrumental/Sample) | Length 4:39
Tonight’s song will sadly be the last for an undetermined time. It is certainly not writers block. I’ve dedicated every night so far this year to composing, recording and uploading a new song every day for 2010. It’s a feat that I feel I have the ability to do since I upload mostly improvisations with little editing so what I upload might not take a long time to accomplish. I just simply need to devote the time to work and therefore will not be able to continue with my musical goals this year.
What you may not realize is that I spend hours experimenting with sounds and textures on a pallet of incredible gear and might have anywhere from 2 -5 hours of music composed in a variety of styles and influences and recorded on very good gear almost EVERY DAY this year. That’s a lot of music – but’s how I write. If I make the time, the songs are there. I have so much music, I see why I had written nearly 4,000 pieces like this when I was in my mid-late twenties.
That has come at a tremendous sacrifice financially for our family and because I need more hours in my days (and evenings) to hunker down and focus on estabishing multiple streams of income, I am unable to continue to devote my evenings to music until I can take some time to pursue it once this storm is gone.
Creatively the past 6 1/2 months I have leaned heavily on Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Atmosphere and Trillion as well as the Korg Triton Extreme, Roland Fantom X8, and a host of plugins such as Waves Broadcast and Producion tools, TC Electronic Mastering Bundle, UAD-1 Ultra Pack, Guitar Rig 3 and 4 and many, many other goodies that enable me to capture what I do at a very high quality – even if it’s just an improvisation and there are some mistakes left in for “purity” reasons.
But most of all, I’m a guitar player. I love to play everything from extreme metal to ambient on both acoustic and electric guitars. I have played my beautiful Breedlove acoustic guitar nearly every day the first half of 2010. Of course, I play what I consider to be the best electric guitar I’ve ever played (27+ years), the Ibanez Jem7v.
I’ve REALLY enjoyed this opportunity to test myself as an artist and getting through the first half of the year writing so much new music. It’s time to re-invest my evenings into work for a while. I might upload once in a while – but we’ll see.
Special thanks to Brian Defusco, Chris Longo and Paul Feather from our band “Migraine” for inspiring a few riffs in this FINAL improvisation for a while from our 1998 single “It’s Over Now”.
Thank you for listening!
